Villa Bossi 2018

Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG

The Villa Bossi Riserva has always been the emblem of the selection of the finest blends. It could be called a Gran Riserva, a Gran Cru or a wine for contemplation. Always the flagship wine, a structured and remarkably long-lived Riserva, it has been produced from these varieties only since 1988.

Harvest and climate

The 2018 vintage was marked by rainfall through the winter and by a mild spring. The summer was changeable, with a very hot July followed by an August of rainfall that brought temperatures down. This gave grapes of excellent quality, with the aromas and notes that would be found in the wine.

Fermentation and vinification

Fermentation takes place in vats at a temperature of 20°C, controlled by a refrigeration unit. Malolactic fermentation follows in oak casks.

Ageing

Rests for 12 months in 25-hl Slavonian oak casks, 12 months in barriques and 24 months in bottle.

Tasting notes

Villa Bossi 2018 is an intense ruby red, with a fine colouring weave and light purple highlights. Great impact on the nose, with fruit of ripe, macerated cherry and blackberry, followed by sweet, well-integrated vanilla spice with balsamic and toasted shadings. The finish shows notes of chocolate and coffee. On the palate, great structure and character. The wine's fullness reveals itself in the roundness and personality of the tannins. The finish is long, with fruity and mineral notes, closing on a pleasing hint of chocolate.

Serving temperature and glass

The recommended serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C. The bottle should be opened about an hour beforehand; for older vintages the use of a decanter is recommended. The glass to use for this wine is the Balloon or the Bordeaux.

Pairing

Stews and roasts of large game, well-aged and mature cheeses.

Production area

Tenuta della Villa Bossi, at an altitude of around 300 metres above sea level, in the Sottomonte and Camerata vineyards, with a southerly exposure on the hillside, where there are 9.2 hectares of Sangiovese, 3.1 hectares of Colorino and 2.7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon.
