Ser Amerigo 2009

Rosso Colli Toscana Centrale IGT

It was born of Bernardo Gondi’s vision: while experimenting with a range of international varieties, he felt the need for a seductive, modern wine within the Tenuta Bossi range, made from a blend of international and indigenous grapes.

The vintages

Harvest and climate

The 2012 vintage was marked by a harsh winter and regular rainfall, above all in January and February. The spring, distinguished by good rainfall, proved decisive in sustaining the long summer drought. Between the end of August and the first days of September there were heavy showers that brought about fine ripening. The grapes were picked by hand in early October, apart from the Merlot, which was harvested in the first weeks of September.

Fermentation and vinification

Fermentation takes place in vats at a temperature of 20°C, controlled by a refrigeration unit. Malolactic fermentation follows in oak casks

Ageing

Rests for 12 months in 25-hl Slavonian oak casks, 12 months in barriques and 24 months in bottle.

Tasting notes

Ser Amerigo 2012 is a lively ruby red with purple highlights. The nose is complex, intense and immediately appealing. One perceives varied hints of small red fruit preserve such as wild strawberry, spicy notes of liquorice, eucalyptus and cinnamon, opening in the glass with nuances of leather and sweet tobacco. On the palate it is full, with a refined tannic weave and vivid savouriness, softened by a generous fruity embrace of undergrowth that lends the whole elegance and balance. The finish reveals balsamic and liquorice aromas.

Serving temperature and glass

The recommended serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C. The bottle should be opened about an hour beforehand; for older vintages the use of a decanter is recommended. The glass to use for this wine is the Balloon or the Bordeaux.

Pairing

Grilled red meats, game birds, Tuscan pecorino

Production area

Tenuta della Villa Bossi, at an altitude of around 300 metres above sea level, in the Sottomonte and Camerata vineyards, with a southerly exposure on the hillside, where there are 9.2 hectares of Sangiovese, 3.1 hectares of Colorino and 2 hectares of Merlot.
