Poggio Diamante 2020

Chianti Rufina Riserva

The Poggio Diamante vineyard, discovered by Marie de Labrugiere, was first planted in the mid-1800s. From it the young widow Gondi produced a wine of great structure and character that distinguished itself at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Replanted by Bernardo Gondi in 2000, it has always been the principal vineyard for Villa Bossi, another gem of Chianti Rufina. The vineyard's different Sangiovese clones give this wine great elegance and character.

The vintages

Harvest and climate

The summer of 2019 was particularly hot and dry, but the sparse rainfall was enough to produce healthy grapes, with the aromas and scents we find again in the wine. The quality of the grapes picked and brought into the cellar was outstanding. The grapes were harvested by hand in early October.

Fermentation and vinification

Fermentation takes place in a 50 hl steel vat, at a temperature controlled by a refrigeration unit, followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

In 20 hl Austrian oak casks for 18 months, then 6 months in second-passage barriques and 6 months in bottle.

Tasting notes

Poggio Diamante 2019 is an intense, brilliant ruby red with slight violet reflections. Striking on the nose, with fruity and floral notes including rose, macerated woodland fruit such as cherry and redcurrant, along with orange. Sweet spice such as vanilla follows, closing on leather, chocolate and tobacco. On the palate the notes found on the nose return, and above all there is a fresh drive recalling citrus such as blood orange, and redcurrant, closing with light hints of liquorice. An elegant wine of real personality, with silky, well-integrated tannins.
