Around the mid-1980s Bernardo Gondi began experimenting with Cabernet; he then decided to buy barriques and to try his hand at a few blends. After several attempts, in 1989 he concluded that the finest choice for the first Super Tuscan of Tenuta Bossi was a single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Given the wine's power and structure, he chose a name that would evoke the family's warrior origins.

Harvest and climate

The winter and spring of 2015 were marked by mild temperatures and frequent rain. September and the first half of October, the harvest period itself, were climatically perfect. The swings between day and night temperatures made for flawless fruit, with the great primary aromas that would later be found in the wines. The grapes were picked by hand in early October.

Fermentation and vinification

Fermentation takes place in vats at 20° C, controlled by a refrigeration unit. Malolactic fermentation follows in oak casks.

Ageing

It rests for 12 months in 20 hl Slavonian oak casks, 12 months in barriques and 24 months in bottle.

Tasting notes

Mazzaferrata 2015 is an impenetrable ruby red of striking visual impact, with almost violet reverberations. The nose is highly intense and greatly complex, opening on black fruits such as blueberry juice and plum before unfolding into spicy and toasty notes. The spice is sweet, with hints of cardamom and cumin, closing on nuances of bitter chocolate and sweet tobacco. On the palate it is powerful and rich, the tannins tight and silky. The mouth echoes the blueberry fruit alongside the toasty, spicy notes. A wine of great personality!

Serving temperature and glass

The recommended serving temperature is between 16 and 18 C°. The bottle should be opened about an hour beforehand; for older vintages a decanter is advised. The glass to use for this wine is a balloon or a Bordeaux.

Pairing

Braised and stewed meats of various kinds, and small game, feathered game included.

Production area

The Villa Bossi estate, at an altitude of around 300 metres above sea level, in the dedicated Sottomonte vineyard: 2.7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon with a southern exposure, set on the hillside.
