Villa Bossi Vertical 1979 – 2018: through iconic years and in large formats

On Sunday 12 February, Palazzo Gondi hosted a vertical tasting of Villa Bossi, through iconic years and in large formats. The tasting was led by Gabriele Gorelli MW and took place in the imposing hall of the Renaissance Palazzo Gondi, built in 1489 to a design by Giuliano da Sangallo. The Marchese Bernardo Gondi and his son Gerardo, today the 25th generation, took part, together with the oenologist Fabrizio Moltard.

Marchesi Gondi - Tenuta Bossi lies in the heart of the Chianti Rufina, a celebrated winegrowing area known since the time of the Etruscans. It covers 315 hectares, of which 20 ha are under vine, 30 ha under olive groves and the remainder woodland and arable land.

It has belonged since 1592 to the GONDI, an ancient Florentine family first recorded in the twelfth century. Beneath the Villa lie the monumental vaulted cellars, where the wines mature in oak casks and barriques.

Villa Bossi has always been the emblem and fullest expression of the estate as a Chianti Rufina Riserva, and has its origin in the wine made by an ancestor of the present owners, a Chianti in the Burgundian style.

It was as long ago as 1878 that Carlo Gondi entered this first form of Riserva at the Paris Exposition and won a whole series of prizes, as recorded by the medals on his price list.

Historically it comes from the estate's most important vineyard, the Poggio Diamante vineyard, first planted by Carlo's mother, Marie Gondi de Labrugière, one of the first women winegrowers of Tuscany.

This vertical retraced the last 50 years of the estate's history. The vintages tasted were 1979, 1982, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, closing with the Chianti Rufina Riserva, Terraelectae Poggio Diamante 2018
