Sabine Frommel - Giuliano da Sangallo

On Saturday 18 April the volume “Giuliano da Sangallo” by Sabine Frommel, the distinguished director of the course in Renaissance art history at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes of the Sorbonne, was presented; published by Edifir.

The volume traces the development of the great architect who worked between the beginning of Lorenzo il Magnifico's rise and the election of his son, Pope Leo X, to the papal throne. Giuliano Giamberti da Sangallo was an architect, sculptor and engineer. He built such important works as the Villa Medicea at Poggio a Caiano, Palazzo della Gherardesca and Palazzo Gondi, the Cappella Gondi in Santa Maria Novella, the Sacristy of Santo Spirito in Florence, the Church of Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato and that of the Umiltà in Pistoia. He also worked in Milan and in France.

He turned his hand to sculpture as well — witness the monumental fireplace in Palazzo Gondi — and finally, together with his brother Antonio, he built imposing military works. Alongside many Florentines, the presentation was attended by eminent scholars from other cities, among them Francesco Solinas, Adriano Ghisetti, Manuel Parada Lopez de Corsel, Howard Burns, Alessandro Nova, Brigitte Cédolin, Doris Carl and Claudia Conforti.
